TMJD (temporomandibular joint disorder) refers to a collection of disorders that affect the TMJ joint, which joins the jaw to the skull. TMJD can be caused by many things, including, but not limited to:
- Arthritis
- Teeth grinding
- Illness or disease
- Jaw or TMJ trauma
- Poor posture
- Clenching of the jaw
- Bite misalignment
- Dislocation
- Stress
Many people don’t realize that they are suffering from TMJD because some symptoms seem unrelated. Symptoms may include:
- Prevalent jaw soreness or pain at certain times of the day
- A tooth- or earache not caused by infection or other dental issues
- A clicking or popping sound when opening or closing the mouth
- Trouble closing and opening the mouth or chewing
- Recurring migraines or tension headaches (especially when waking)
- Recent changes to or a misaligned bite
- Pain in your jaw when biting, yawning, chewing, or speaking
- A ‘locked’ jaw when biting, yawning, chewing, or speaking
