Here at Joe Pinney Family Dentistry, we provide preventive periodontal treatment. Periodontics is the examination and treatment of tissues, gums, and bones that support the teeth in order to prevent periodontal (gum) disease. Because we are committed to maintaining your overall oral health, we will help you learn how to achieve lifetime health for your gums and teeth.
Periodontal Disease
When an excessive amount of calculus (tartar) and plaque have accumulated around the teeth, the surrounding area (sometimes including the jawbone) can start to deteriorate and the gums may start to redden, swell, or bleed. This is the beginning of periodontal (gum) disease. When left untreated, gum disease will eventually destroy the bone and gums.
Periodontal disease can be difficult to detect in its early stages because the symptoms are usually painless. Some of the signs and symptoms of developing periodontal disease include the following:
- Bleeding, red, or inflamed gums
- Loose teeth
- Constant bad breath
- Increased spaces between your teeth
- Pain or tenderness
- Pus around the teeth and gums
- Receding gums around your teeth
Besides the possibility of losing your permanent teeth, many other health risks have been linked with periodontal disease, including heart disease. To prevent unnecessary health risks, we make every effort to prevent periodontal disease.
To avoid advanced periodontal disease, it is important that patients remember to eat a balanced diet, have good oral hygiene habits, and attend your scheduled dental appointments with Dr. Pinney. If you have any pain or discomfort in your teeth or gums, please contact Joe Pinney Family Dentistry immediately.
